Choose an AVIF file. Your browser decodes it and re-encodes to PNG — lossless, no settings, transparency preserved. If the file will not open at all, the browser is the problem rather than the file: AVIF decoding arrived in Chrome 85, Firefox 93 and Safari 16.4.

An exact copy, at a price

AVIF is the most efficient of the common image formats, so this conversion runs the expensive way: five to ten times the original size is normal for a photo. The pixels are exact — PNG discards nothing the decoder produced — but PNG cannot undo compression that has already happened. If the AVIF looks soft or blotchy in places, the PNG preserves that faithfully, in a much larger file.

Why the AVIF will not open and the PNG will

AVIF only reached the last of the major browsers in 2023, and desktop software runs years behind browsers. Windows needs an extension installed from the Microsoft Store before Explorer or Photos will preview one, and plenty of image editors, older phone galleries, document tools and upload forms simply do not recognise the format. None of that applies to a PNG, which is the point of converting.

Batasan

A few older browsers cannot decode AVIF; if the image fails to load, try a different browser. PNG files are often larger than AVIF.

Why can I not open AVIF files?

AVIF is a newer image format that many editors and older apps do not support yet. Converting to PNG keeps full quality and opens anywhere.

Can I convert a batch of AVIF files?

Up to 30 per run on this page, zipped together. Since every output is a full-size PNG, thirty of them is a lot of megabytes — send them to JPG instead if the images are photographs.
