What those extra megabytes buy is compatibility, not quality — the picture does not get better, it just stops being a format some software refuses.
What opens a PNG but not a WebP
Older desktop editors, image libraries in some programming stacks, print and prepress workflows, document templates, and a surprising number of upload forms that validate by file extension. WebP is comfortable on the web and awkward off it. PNG is what you send when there is nobody to ask what the other end supports.
