What FB2 Reader can do

No operating system opens FB2 on its own

FB2 is an XML book format that stays common in Russian-language libraries, and neither Windows, macOS, iOS nor Android reads it without an extra app. This page opens it directly in the browser.

Zipped books open too

FB2 books are usually distributed as .fb2.zip. You do not need to unpack anything — drop the archive in and the book inside opens, illustrations included.

Books in the old Russian encodings open too

A large share of the FB2 files in circulation predate UTF-8 and are stored in windows-1251, KOI8-R or ISO-8859-5. A reader that assumes UTF-8 turns those into a page of question marks. This one reads the encoding declared at the top of the file and decodes to match, so a book from a decade-old library opens as text rather than as mojibake.

This page reads; the desktop remembers

Here the book opens and you read, nothing else. Open it on the desktop and the reader keeps your place, your font — serif or sans — and a text size between 15 and 26, plus bookmarks and quotes you send to Notes. All of it lives on this device: there is no account, and nothing follows you to another phone.

Questions

Do I need to unzip a .fb2.zip file first?

No — the archive opens directly; the reader finds the book inside it.

Is the book uploaded anywhere?

No. It is read in your browser and stays on your device.

Are illustrations shown?

Yes. FB2 stores images inside the file itself, and they are rendered along with the text.
