What the five parameters are actually for

utm_source answers where the click came from (newsletter, google, partner-blog). utm_medium answers how it travelled (email, cpc, social). utm_campaign names the push it belongs to (spring_sale). The two optional ones earn their keep less often: utm_term carries a paid keyword, and utm_content separates two links that lead to the same page — the header button and the footer link in one email. Empty fields are simply left out of the URL.

Lowercase, or your report splits in two

Most analytics tools compare these values character by character, so Facebook and facebook become two separate sources and one campaign shows up as two half-sized rows. Pick one spelling — lowercase, underscores instead of spaces — and reuse it every time. The full builder in nopa keeps templates for Google Ads, newsletters, LinkedIn, and Telegram plus a history of what you already sent, which is the practical way to stay consistent across months.

What happens to the URL you paste

A missing https:// is added, existing query parameters on your link are kept, and a utm_ tag that is already there is replaced rather than duplicated. Values are URL-encoded, so a space in a campaign name comes out as a plus sign — that is correct and analytics reads it back as a space, but it is why underscores look tidier. Anything after # stays at the end where it belongs.

Questions

What are UTM parameters?

Tags added to URLs so analytics tools know where traffic comes from.

Do I need Google Analytics?

No. UTM parameters work with any analytics tool that reads URL tags.

Should I put UTM tags on links between my own pages?

No. A tagged URL is a different URL to a search engine and to your own analytics, so internal links tagged this way overwrite the original source of the visit. Keep UTM tags on links coming in from outside: emails, ads, social posts, printed QR codes.

Can I reuse campaign settings?

Yes — continue in the desktop for templates and link history, so repeat campaigns take seconds.
