What Compress Image to 1 MB can do
Where the 1 MB cap comes from
Government and school portals, insurance and bank uploads, rental applications and many marketplaces cap each file at 1 MB. A phone photo is usually 2–6 MB, and HEIC photos from an iPhone are rejected outright by many of those forms.
Sharp at 1 MB
At this target a 12-megapixel phone photo often keeps its full size, at a clearly lower JPG quality: the tool goes as low as 40% before it shrinks anything. A detailed one is scaled down, usually to 2,560 px wide, still plenty for a screen or a 10 × 15 cm print. Photos over about 16.8 megapixels (24 and 48 MP on recent iPhones) are first scaled down to fit the browser. Whenever the image was scaled, the result line says so and shows the new width.
iPhone HEIC in, JPG out
Choose a HEIC photo and it is decoded in your browser and saved as JPG, the format almost every form accepts. Up to 30 photos go through in one batch and download as one ZIP.

Questions
Will the photo lose quality?
Some. A 12-megapixel photo often keeps its pixel size, but at a JPG quality that can go down to 40%; a detailed one is scaled to 2,560 px wide instead. On a phone or laptop screen that is hard to tell apart. Check the preview before you download.
My photo is already under 1 MB. What happens?
It already fits, so nothing runs at this target, and the page says so. If your form asks for less, tap a smaller target or use the Quality option.
Can I compress a PDF to 1 MB here?
This page is for photos. For a PDF use Compress PDF, which works best on scans and photo-heavy files.
