How to use

Choose a JPG; the output is WebP. The quality slider starts at 92%, the value that keeps the conversion invisible on most photographs. After converting, the result line shows both file sizes, so you can see whether the saving was worth it before you download anything.

When to choose this format

WebP can reduce file size while keeping good visual quality.

Expect roughly a quarter to a third off

At matched visual quality WebP usually lands 25–35% smaller than JPEG on photographs. The exact figure swings with the picture, and a JPG that was already heavily compressed may barely shrink at all — there is little left to squeeze. The catch: this is lossy re-encoded as lossy, so a little more detail goes each time. At 92% that is hard to see, but round-tripping the same photo repeatedly will show.

Serve the WebP, keep the JPG

Every current browser decodes WebP, so it is a straight win for page weight on a website. It is not a drop-in replacement everywhere else: some upload forms, older photo software and print services still expect .jpg, and a few email clients will not render WebP inline. Keep the original for those and use the WebP where you control the page.

Limitations

Large photos may take longer on weaker devices.

Questions

How much smaller will the file be?

Usually noticeably smaller at similar visual quality — the exact saving depends on the image.

Does the desktop help with a page full of photos?

Yes — up to 30 JPGs convert to WebP in one run and come back as a single ZIP, with the filenames preserved so you can swap them into a page without renaming anything.

Which formats are supported?

This page converts JPG to WebP. Other pairs — JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, HEIC, SVG — each have their own tool, gathered in the related tools on this page.
