What Convert PNG to WebP can do

How to use

Choose a PNG; the output is set to WebP. One control matters — the quality slider, at 92% by default. The WebP is written by your browser’s own encoder in lossy mode, so even 100% is not a pixel-exact copy of the PNG. Leave it at 92 unless you are compressing a screenshot with small text, where pushing it higher helps.

When to choose this format

WebP often gives smaller file sizes than PNG for web use.

What actually happens to the file

A photograph that was sitting in a PNG usually collapses — several megabytes down to a few hundred KB — because PNG was the wrong container for it in the first place. Screenshots, logos and flat interface graphics shed more like a quarter to a half, and not for free: lossy WebP softens the hard edges between flat colours. The result line shows both sizes, so compare them and check small text at 100% before you commit.

Where WebP is safe to use

On the web, everywhere — every browser still receiving updates decodes WebP, and Safari has since 2020. Off the web it is patchier: Windows 10 and 11 preview it in Explorer and Photos, but older desktop software, some print workflows and plenty of upload forms still reject the extension. For a site you control, WebP is the right answer; for a person or a form, send the PNG.

Limitations

Very old browsers may not display WebP.

Questions

Does WebP keep transparency?

Yes — WebP supports transparency, so transparent areas of your PNG stay transparent.

Can I convert a set of site images together?

Up to 30 PNGs to WebP in one pass, downloaded as one ZIP. The quality slider is shared by the whole batch, so set it before you run rather than per file.

Which formats are supported?

This page converts PNG to WebP. Other pairs — JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, HEIC, SVG — each have their own tool, gathered in the related tools on this page.
