How to use

Choose a PNG; the output is set to WebP. One control matters: the quality slider, at 92% by default. The WebP is written by your browser’s own encoder, lossy below 100%, so at 92 it is not a pixel-exact copy of the PNG; at 100% Chrome and Edge write lossless WebP instead. Leave it at 92 unless you are compressing a screenshot with small text, where pushing it higher helps.

How much smaller, and what it costs

A photograph that was sitting in a PNG usually collapses from several megabytes to a few hundred KB, because PNG was the wrong container for it in the first place. Screenshots, logos and flat interface graphics shed more like a quarter to a half, and not for free: lossy WebP softens the hard edges between flat colours. The result line shows both sizes, so compare them and check small text at 100% before you commit.

Where WebP is safe to use

On the web, everywhere: every browser still receiving updates decodes WebP, and Safari has since 2020. Off the web it is patchier: Windows 10 and 11 preview it in Explorer and Photos, but older desktop software, some print workflows and plenty of upload forms still reject the extension. For a site you control, WebP is the right answer; for an upload form, send a JPG.

Limitations

Safari and the browsers on iPhone and iPad cannot create WebP. There, use Chrome, Edge or Firefox on a computer or an Android phone. Very old browsers may not display WebP at all.
