How to use

Choose an AVIF file; the output is JPG with the quality slider at 92%. One thing to know before you start: JPG has no transparency channel, and this page has no background colour picker, so transparent areas come out solid — usually black. If your AVIF has transparency, convert it to PNG instead.

When to choose this format

JPG is accepted almost everywhere for photos and usually weighs less than PNG, but does not support transparency.

About twice the size of the AVIF

AVIF is roughly half the weight of JPEG at comparable quality, so converting back typically doubles the file, sometimes more. Both formats are lossy, which makes this a re-encode rather than a copy: at 92% the extra loss is very hard to spot on a photograph, but it is a second generation of compression and not a duplicate of the original.

JPG goes where AVIF is turned away

Application forms, visa and ID uploads, print labs, older phones and photo managers, and desktop editors released before AVIF existed. None of them will take a .avif, and most of them name JPG explicitly. Browsers have caught up with AVIF; everything else is still catching up, and JPG never needed to.

Limitations

A few older browsers cannot decode AVIF. JPG has no transparency, and this conversion has no background colour picker — convert to PNG if the image has transparent areas.

Questions

Will the photo lose quality?

JPG is compressed, but quality stays high enough for photos, sharing, and documents. Choose PNG instead if you need a lossless copy.

Is there a faster way through a folder of AVIF photos?

The desktop converter takes up to 30 files, sends them all to JPG at one quality setting, and hands back a single ZIP with the original filenames.

Which formats are supported?

This page converts AVIF to JPG. Other pairs — JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, HEIC, SVG — each have their own tool, gathered in the related tools on this page.
