How to use
Choose a HEIC or HEIF photo. On a browser that decodes HEIC natively it converts immediately; on one that does not, a small open-source decoder (libheif, about a megabyte) downloads once and stays cached for every later photo. The output is JPG with the quality slider at 92%. There is no background colour picker here — camera photos have no transparency to fill.
When to choose this format
Use when a website, email, or Windows PC cannot open HEIC — JPG is accepted almost everywhere for photos.
The JPG comes out bigger than the HEIC
HEIC is roughly half the size of JPEG at similar quality — that is why Apple switched to it — so expect the JPG to land around one and a half to two times the original: a 2 MB photo becoming 3–4 MB is normal. One more thing before you send it on: re-encoding through the browser drops the photo’s metadata, so the JPG carries no capture date, camera details or GPS location. When sharing, that is usually a feature; if you need the date, note it first.
Where a .heic gets rejected
Windows will not preview HEIC until you install an extension from the Microsoft Store. Visa, passport and university application portals reject the extension outright, as do most job boards, print kiosks, older Android phones, and email and chat clients that show it as an attachment nobody can open. Every one of them asks for JPG, which is why this is the most common thing anyone does to an iPhone photo.
Limitations
The first HEIC conversion may download a small on-device decoder (~1–2 MB) once; later conversions stay local and faster. Burst/Live Photo sequences use the primary frame.
