What Convert JPG to PNG can do

How to use

Choose a JPG and it converts straight away; PNG has no quality setting, so there is nothing to adjust. Download the PNG, or open the free desktop to keep it in Files.

The PNG gets bigger, not sharper

Expect the file to grow, often three to ten times for a photo. JPG threw detail away to get small; PNG stores whatever it is handed without throwing anything away. What it cannot do is put back what JPG already discarded: if the source has visible blocking around edges, the PNG preserves that blocking perfectly. Convert to PNG to stop losing quality from here on, not to recover it.

What PNG buys you

PNG is the right working copy when an image will be cropped, edited and saved several more times: it can be re-saved without losing anything, where a JPG loses a little on every save. It is not the better format to send, because many upload forms ask for JPG by name and the PNG is several times larger.

Limitations

The PNG does not carry the photo’s date, camera details or location, because the picture is redrawn to make it. Photos over about 16.8 megapixels are scaled down to fit what browsers can draw, and the result says so.

Questions

Will my JPG become transparent?

No. JPG has no transparency, so the PNG keeps the same solid background. PNG only preserves transparency that already exists in the source.

Can I convert several JPGs at once?

Yes, up to 30 in one run, downloaded as one ZIP. Each PNG keeps the name of the JPG it came from.
