How to use

Choose a HEIC or HEIF file. As with any HEIC conversion, a browser without native support fetches a small decoder once and works from cache afterwards. The output is PNG: lossless, no quality slider, nothing else to set.

When to choose this format

PNG is lossless and works in editors that do not open HEIC. Prefer JPG if you only need a smaller photo for sharing.

Expect ten times the size, or more

This is the heaviest conversion on the site. A 12-megapixel iPhone photo is around 2 MB as HEIC; the same image as PNG lands somewhere around 15–25 MB, because PNG stores every pixel and photographs barely compress losslessly. It is an exact copy of what the decoder produced, with no further loss — but if you only need to send the photo somewhere, JPG gives you the same picture at roughly a tenth of the weight.

When PNG is the right target instead of JPG

When the photo is going into an editor that cannot open HEIC and must not be handed a re-compressed file: retouching, compositing, anything that will be saved repeatedly. PNG is also the one to pick if the background is going to be cut out later, since JPG cannot hold transparency. For sending a photo to a person, a form or a printer, JPG is the better target — PNG’s advantage costs about ten times the file size.

Limitations

PNG files are often larger than HEIC or JPG. The first conversion may download a small on-device decoder once.

Questions

HEIC or HEIF — both work?

Yes. iPhone photos are usually .heic; .heif is the same family. Both convert here.

Can I convert a set of photos for editing in one go?

Up to 30 HEIC files per batch in the desktop, all to PNG, downloaded as one ZIP. Keep an eye on the total: at 15–25 MB apiece a full batch runs into hundreds of megabytes before it is zipped.

Which formats are supported?

This page converts HEIC to PNG. Other pairs — JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, HEIC, SVG — each have their own tool, gathered in the related tools on this page.
