What Watermark ID Copy can do

Why mark an ID copy

Landlords, hotels, employers and online services ask for a copy of a passport or ID card, and that copy can outlive its purpose — forwarded, stored, or reused to open an account in your name. A watermark that says who it was for, what for, and when makes the copy much harder to pass off for anything else, and if it turns up somewhere, it says whom you gave it to. It is not a legal shield, but it is a step privacy guides commonly recommend.

What to write

Keep it short and specific: “Copy for Smith Lettings — rental application — 25 Sep 2026”. The page repeats that line in rows across the whole image, so it covers the photo and the numbers and cannot be cropped away. Lower the opacity until the document stays readable for the person who needs it.

Why this should not be uploaded

An ID scan is exactly the file you should not hand to a random website to protect it. Here the watermark is drawn by your browser: the photo is not uploaded, there is no account, and nothing is kept after you close the tab. Watermark PDF marks every page of a PDF scan, but with one line across the middle that a PDF editor can lift off — not a pattern baked into the pixels, as here.

Questions

Is a watermarked copy still valid?

For most requests — a rental file, a hotel, a pre-check — yes: the details stay readable. If an authority asks for an unmarked certified copy, a watermark is not the right tool.

Can someone remove the watermark?

It is baked into the pixels and repeats over the photo and the numbers, so there is no clean copy of them left to patch from: taking it out means retouching row by row. Someone patient with a good editor or an AI eraser can still get close — treat it as a deterrent and a record of whom the copy was for, not as protection.

Can I black out numbers I do not want to share?

Not on this page — it adds a watermark, it does not redact. Crop or cover those fields before you choose the photo.

Is my ID uploaded anywhere?

No. The photo is processed in your browser and never leaves your device.
