What MOV to MP4 can do

Why it takes seconds

MOV and MP4 are two wrappers for the same kinds of video. Most converters decode every frame and encode it again, which is slow and costs quality each time. This page moves the picture and the sound into an MP4 exactly as they are, so even a long video is ready in seconds and looks identical to the original.

iPhone videos: HEVC stays HEVC

iPhones record in HEVC (H.265) unless the camera is set to Most Compatible. The MP4 keeps the HEVC: it plays on iPhone, Mac and Android, and on Windows once Microsoft’s HEVC extension is installed. A copy cannot change that: turning HEVC into H.264 means re-encoding, which this page does not do. So it tells you what is inside your file before you download. Most Compatible iPhone videos and most camera MOVs are H.264 and play everywhere.

What you get

An .mp4 with the same name, picture, sound, length and orientation: a video filmed upright stays upright. The file is put together in this browser’s memory, so a very long video on an older phone can run out of it; the page says so if it does. A video that is already MP4 has nothing to convert, and a WebM can become MP4 only by re-encoding. The page says so instead of making a file that changes nothing.

Questions

Is my video uploaded?

No. It is opened and converted in this browser tab, and nothing is sent anywhere.

Does converting lower the quality?

No. The picture and sound are copied as they are, not re-encoded, so what is inside the MP4 is identical to the MOV.

Will the MP4 play on Windows?

An H.264 video plays straight away. An HEVC video (the iPhone default) plays once Microsoft’s HEVC extension is installed. The page names what is inside your file as soon as you open it.

Does it work with MKV too?

Yes. An MKV converts to MP4 the same way, by copying; subtitles inside it are not carried over.
