What Compare PDF can do

Only what changed

A 40-page contract with three edits comes back as three paragraphs, each with its page number: removed words struck through in red, added words marked in green. An amount changed from 100 000 to 150 000 is one number out and one in, and a comma that became a full stop shows as just that. Long unchanged stretches of a paragraph are cut to the words around the change.

Words, not layout

What is compared is the text. A paragraph that wraps differently, or moved to the next page, is not a change, and neither are running headers and page numbers. A new font, colour or picture is not seen. A scanned PDF holds pictures of pages, not words, so there is nothing to compare; nopa says which of the two files is a scan.

Neither version leaves your device

Both files are read in your browser, on this device. That matters most for what people usually compare: drafts of contracts, offers and policies before they are signed. The result can be saved as a report, an HTML file that opens in any browser and prints to PDF, holding only the changed paragraphs.

Questions

Which file goes first?

The original first, then the changed version: what only the second file has is marked as added. Got them the wrong way round? Swap puts them in order without picking them again.

Is the download really free?

Yes. No account, no trial and no watermark of ours on the file: it is made in your browser, and you can save it as many times as you like.

Does it show formatting changes?

No. Only the words are compared. Bold, fonts, colours, spacing and pictures are not, so a change that is only visual will not appear.

Can I compare scanned PDFs?

Not word by word: a scan holds pictures of pages, not text. nopa tells you which file is a scan instead of reporting a page of false differences.

How large can the files be?

Up to 100 MB together on a computer and 50 MB on a phone. A file that needs a password to open is refused by name; remove the password with Unlock PDF first.

Are my files uploaded?

No. Both PDFs are read and compared in your browser; nopa has no server that could receive them.
